I really can’t believe I am already writing to you for the last time in 2017 – where has the year gone?!
Of course the referendum result in 2016 has meant so much of my year has been spent talking about and working on Brexit – this is hugely frustrating but, as the only Liberal Democrat MEP in the Parliament I feel it is absolutely necessary to continue forging cross-party relationships with my colleagues from other parties – many of whom are equally as frustrated and staggered as me.
But, this wouldn’t be much of a Christmas message if I didn’t give you some hope. Many of you will have seen recent polls, one for the Mail on Sunday and one conducted by YouGov, which show that more than 50% of the public think the people should have a vote on the terms of the Brexit Deal.
As many know the Liberal Democrats have been campaigning on this right from 2016 – is this to thwart Brexit? No. It’s because we believe the people should be able to have a say on the Deal – many on both sides of the debate have completely lost faith in this Government’s ability to negotiate a good deal for us. When Mrs May could have been working to secure us a good deal she put party before country yet again and called an election.
The British people deserve better. We all deserve a say.
So, rest up friends and colleagues – enjoy the festive season, we all need to be on top form next year for ensuring this becomes a reality.
Thanks for reading!
