New round of regional development funding available for flood defences across the South East

Liberal Democrat MEP, Catherine Bearder, has written to a number of local councils urging them to apply for EU regional development funding for building flood defence infrastructure.

After weeks of indecision, Defra informed the South East MEP over Twitter that they would not be submitting an application to the Commission.

Since contacting these councils there has been progress at the EU level when the new round of EU regional development funding was released (2014-2020) and special provision has been made for measures mitigating the effects of climate change.

The MEP has drawn up a list of known affected areas in her constituency and is now offering her support to both County Councils and the below district and Borough councils to work together on the best ways to receive funding for new flood defence measures.

Catherine commented:

"These floods have been horrendous and have devastated so many right across the South East over the festive and New Year season.

"As the national government have not applied for EU funding I am now offering my support to work with local councils both at County and District and Borough level to obtain these much needed funds.

"I was so pleased to see measures for mitigating the effects of climate change included in the new round of regional development funding that will mean these councils have a real chance of getting the funding they need.

"I hope these councils will want to work with me to obtain the much needed funding to ensure their areas remain drier and safer when future storms hit."
