Lib Dems score by-election win

Lib Dems were last night celebrating a by-election win in the South East.

Alex Slater managed to win a seat on Wycombe District Council in the Hazlemere South ward.

He polled 412 votes ahead of the UKIP candidate Brian Mapletoft who came second with 365.

The seat was previously held by Tory councillor Bob Bate before he stood down earlier this year.

Catherine Bearder, Lib Dem MEP for the South East, said: "This is a great result for Alex and shows confidence the public has in the party.

"Alex is keen to represent the ward and implement Liberal Democrat policies, which this win clearly shows the public support."

Turnout was 29.68 per cent with 1,093 votes cast.
