Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder has urged Europe and developing countries to make sure the benefits of development reach disabled people.
During a meeting in Kinshasa between the European Parliament and parliamentarians from across Africa on how to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, Mrs Bearder argued that a policy for inclusion of disabled people in the development process is an essential step for achieving the development goals.
Mrs Bearder commented, "Developing countries must create clear policies aimed at including disabled people in the development process."
"Nearly 520 million people in developing countries live with a disability. If specific policies for disabled people are not implemented then we simply won't achieve many of the Millennium Development Goals."
"With 98% of disabled children in developing countries not in full time education, how can we expect to achieve universal primary education without providing help for these disabled children."
