Fresh figures have shown 66,850 people were on an apprenticeship in the South East last year.
The number is an increase of 71 per cent compared to 2009/10 and comes at the start of National Apprenticeship Week.
Catherine Bearder, a Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for the South East, has campaigned to raise awareness of apprenticeship schemes.
She said: "Apprenticeships are a brilliant way for young people to learn a trade and get experience necessary for a successful career.
"The Coalition Government has invested heavily in apprenticeships because they are an effective way of helping young people get jobs.
"Apprenticeships also allow us to build a stronger economy, with a highly- skilled and flexible workforce.
"The schemes rely on employers making opportunities available and I would encourage companies to offer more places."
Catherine last year visited Scottish and Southern Energy, in Thatcham, to find out more about its apprenticeship scheme.
Apprenticeship programme statistics are based on local education authority area for 2011/12 (updated last month).
