Five years ago the EU made huge strides when the anti-trafficking directive was brought into force and yet data shows the number of trafficked individuals continues to rise. Earlier this year I wrote a report examining the Directive’s implementation and outlining the fact that we are still not joined-up enough in our approach. My hope was that we could reawaken an awareness of trafficking that was clear when the directive first came in in 2011. This remains to be seen.
What is abundantly clear, however, is that the refugee crisis makes the issue of trafficking even more pertinent and we must be doing all we can right across Europe to protect the many, many thousands of unaccompanied vulnerable minors.
