The Birds and Habitats Directives protect more than 1,400 threatened species and one million square kilometres of natural habitats in the UK and Europe.
Today the European Commission confirmed that these flagship nature laws will be saved.
Lib Dem Euro MP and RSPB Turtle Dove Champion Catherine Bearder said:
“I am absolutely thrilled by this news - the battle to protect UK nature has been won.
“At long last we have a cast-iron guarantee from the Commission that the EU’s nature protection laws will not be touched.
“I want to thank all the campaigners who worked tirelessly on this to ensure the highest level of protection for our nature.
“I am urging the British government to sign-up to this nature protection after Brexit.”
