A border alert system is needed to stop rogue doctors and nurses moving around Europe to find work, South East England MEP Catherine Bearder said today.
The European Commission has been urged to put in place a tough system to make sure incompetent health workers cannot avoid checks when they move between EU countries.
Catherine said: "There should be a pro-active alert mechanism between member state authorities to warn each other of incompetent and rogue doctors and nurses. This sort of cooperation is what the European Union was set up to do."
The NHS relies heavily on free movement of workers in the EU with almost one in 10 health care professionals trained outside the UK.
But Catherine added: "We must ensure patients can have peace of mind as to the competency of anyone who looks after them. It is also important there are no language barriers between doctors and patients.
"It is now up to the European Commission to come forward with proposals to ensure the best quality of treatment across Europe and propose new legislation if necessary."
