Safer to saddle up after funding boost

Cyclists are set to benefit from a multi-million pound cash injection in roads across the South East.

key_safercycling.pngCatherine Bearder, a Lib Dem MEP for the region, hoped the money would improve safety on dangerous routes.

It is part of a £40m UK-wide funding boost with all schemes expected to be completed within 12 months.

Catherine said: "It is absolutely essential people should be able to cycle to work or school in a safe environment.

"Cycling is healthy and enjoyable, but by getting people out of their cars and on their bikes we ease congestion and strengthen the local economy too."

Transport minister Norman Baker added: "This is part of a £107m investment we have announced in cycling infrastructure in the last year.

"We have also made it easier for councils to set 20mph speed limits and install trixi mirrors at junctions so it is easier for drivers to spot cyclists."
