Plans to scrap EU environmental laws must be stopped

Ahead of the adoption by the new Commission of its work programme for 2015, President of the European Commission Jean- Claude Juncker has drawn up a "kill list" of legislative proposals from the previous Barroso Commission to be considered for withdrawal.

key_catherine.pngA letter outlining the proposals to be scrapped, co-signed by Commission vice-president Frans Timmermans, was sent to the 26 other European commissioners last Friday. Included in the list are legislative proposals to improve air quality as well as the review of waste policy, the key "green growth" proposal put forward by the Barroso Commission and presented in July.

Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder, one of the lead negotiators on the EU's new air quality limits, commented:

"We all want to see smarter, more efficient EU regulation but this cannot come at the expense of our environment and air quality.

"Juncker must recognise the huge economic opportunities of moving toward a cleaner and more resource-efficient economy.

"Europe cannot afford to fall behind in the race to develop the green technologies of the future."
