Responding to the launch of the London Olympics volunteering scheme, champion of the voluntary sector and South East Euro-MP, Catherine Bearder, has encouraged South East residents to get involved and start volunteering.
On the morning of Wednesday 15th September the London 2012 Games Maker scheme opened for people to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympic Games. People are asked to help with the general running of the games as well as specialist roles, such as catering, administration or public relations.
Catherine Bearder said:
"It would be great to see as many people as possible volunteer to help out at the Olympic Games in 2012. It's an opportunity to be involved in a once in a lifetime event."
"I'm sure our volunteers will be the backbone to the games."
"But don't wait till 2012. There is no time like now to start volunteering in your local community."
"There are organisation in this area that are working hard for local people - and they could do with your help as well."
"I started my political life by volunteering with the local play group and as a primary school governor. There are so many ways to help in the community that also gain skills for life."
"2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. I hope we can use this year to make volunteering an important part of life in the South East."
