Yesterday government ministers threw out a proposal to introduce a 5p levy on throwaway cups, spearheaded by the Liberal Democrats.
In a letter to Catherine Bearder MEP, Therese Coffey, the environment minister charged with the task of investigating the issue, said café chains are already doing enough to incentivise customers to bring their own cups.
Yet an estimated 2.5 billion thick paper/plastic cups are thrown away each year.
What’s more, the plastic bag tax, pushed through by Liberal Democrats in government, has successfully reduced plastic bag waste by 85 percent.
Catherine Bearder commented:
“This government is clearly in complete denial of the scandalous waste of throwaway cups.
“We had a real opportunity here to continue on the same track as the one the bag tax took us down – reducing landfill waste – and yet we seem to have swerved off.
“The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight on this issue. We remain committed to reducing landfill waste even if the Tory government are quite comfortable with creating more.”
