EU High Representative Catherine Ashton has announced the EU is suspending negotiations on the EU-Libya framework agreement.
The announcement comes after reports that up to 1,000 people have been killed in fighting between demonstrators and pro-Gaddafi forces. The EU-Libya framework agreement would create a framework for cooperation between the EU and Libya - facilitating the development of trade, political, cultural and security links.
Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder, who is a member of the Parliament's International Trade Committee, commented:
"I completely agree with the decision to suspend all trade negotiations with the Gaddafi administration in Libya in response to violence against civilians."
"Violence against civilians is totally unacceptable and those who commit such acts must be held to account."
"The European Union must use its trading power to support the emerging Middle Eastern democracies."
"Trade incentives should be offered to encourage their smooth transition to stable democracies."
