Today the European Parliament overwhelmingly supported EU-wide plans to cut down on food waste.
The EU’s food waste package calls for non-binding targets for EU countries to cut their food waste down by 30% by 2025 and 50% by 2030. This is in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The food waste package also calls for EU countries to take concrete action in their waste prevention programmes to reduce food waste and food losses.
Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder said:
“It’s high-time we changed our wasteful ways and start to think differently about how we sell our food.
“The culture of rejecting misshapen or slightly damaged fruits and vegetables and only selling perfect ones is unsustainable and inefficient.
“There is a lot of work to be done in education and information so that people know how to reduce their food waste.”
